Apple’s new MacBook

Tag: Uncategorizedadmin @ 12:54 am

When the MacBook Pro was introduced in January 2006, everyone was left wondering: If this is the MacBook Pro , where’s the MacBook? Five months later, the other shoe dropped.

The new non-pro MacBook is a 13-inch laptop that replaces both the iBook and the 12-inch PowerBook G4. But despite its lack of Pro in its name, this little laptop is much more powerful and full-featured than the laptops it’s replacing.
A box-opening hubbub

This morning we got the call — two MacBooks were waiting for us at the downtown San Francisco Apple store. So Macworld Senior Editor Jonathan Seff and I set out on foot to grab Apple’s latest laptops and bring them back to the offices for unpacking, poking, prodding, lab testing, and (who are we kidding?) eventual dissection.

We returned to a crowd of excited staff members, all waiting to see the new laptops. If the buzz around our offices is any indication, there’s a tremendous pent-up demand for the MacBook. (One of our staff members has already placed his order for one, and more are threatening to do so even as we speak.)

The MacBook box is a slightly smaller version of the thin MacBook Pro box. Inside is the MacBook itself, along with an Apple Remote and a MagSafe power adapter. Once I slid the first MacBook out of its protective bag, the entire office oohed and aahed — it was the black model!

New Samsung Notebook Replaces Hard Drive With Flash

Tag: Uncategorizedadmin @ 12:42 am

Is the hard drive history?

Samsung Electronics said Tuesday that it will launch two mobile computers in early June that will do away with hard drives altogether, replacing them with 32 gigabytes of NAND flash memory. The notebooks will be the first to use flash memory as the main storage device.

The Samsung Q1, described as an “ultra-computing device,” will be complemented by the Q30, a 12.1-inch notebook PC. The retail price for the Q1-SSD will be 2.3 million Korean won, (about $2,430), while the Q30-SSD will sell for 3.5 million won (about $3,700). Unfortunately for U.S. consumers, both will be sold in Korea only. Continue reading “New Samsung Notebook Replaces Hard Drive With Flash”

Sun Fire X4500 server crams 48 drives into 4U

Tag: Uncategorizedadmin @ 12:17 pm

To anyone with a base level of computer knowledge, the concept of a single system with 48 hard drives seems insane. To IT folks, it’s even more outrageous; most disk arrays are limited to 15 drives per shelf and certainly aren’t mounted in a server chassis. To Sun, 48 drives in 4U of space is just the newest entry in its line of x64 servers.

The Sun Fire X4500, nicknamed Thumper, is exactly that: a dual-Opteron server with 48 hot-swappable SATA drives in a single 4U chassis, achieving a raw total of 24TB with 500GB SATA drives. You could fit the entire catalog of the Library of Congress on a single X4500 — 2.5 times over. Armed with four gigabit NICs, 4GB of RAM, and a default installation of Solaris x86, the X4500 is a server in a class all its own.

But what’s it really for? Based on the performance levels I saw during my review, I’d say anything that requires lots of fast storage.

Nokia E51 coming soon - are you ready for upgrade?

Tag: Uncategorizedadmin @ 3:29 pm

This is a big news for all Nokia E50 users. It looks like Nokia is ready to launch a new member of the Eseries family and it’s probably going to be a successor of the Nokia E50. At the moment it’s labelled as Nokia Exx but this xml document indicates that the photo we’ve seen all around the internet could be that of Nokia E51.

Wifi, HSDPA and stereo Bluetooth

Nokia E51 will run on Symbian 3.1 (Feature pack 1) which means that there is a whole bunch of new features compared to the Nokia E50. Probably the most popular improvement among users will be implementation of Wifi and HSDPA. I know some folks will be very happy for the stereo Bluetooth support as well.

Sony Breaks Ground With New PDA

Tag: Uncategorizedadmin @ 3:08 pm

The PDA combines an ARM926 processor, a digital signal processor and a CXD2230GA graphics accelerator that uses a 2-dimensional graphics engine to produce 3-D images.Sony’s next handheld computer promises to break new ground in September, but even impressed analysts think its price tag may outweigh its benefits.

The miniature computer does it all: helps customers manage their schedules, records and plays back hours of video, takes pictures, sends and receives e-mail, and surfs the Web wirelessly.

Sony has even developed its own Handheld Engine to ensure that the device does it all without taxing the battery life.

Sony is so confident Americans will want this sleek new product — which folds into a convenient 4.2-by-3.5-inch box and has an eye-catching high-resolution flip-and-rotate screen — that the company plans to charge $700 for it. The new PEG-UX50 Clié will appear in retail stores in September.

IBM Tweaks BladeCenter S for the Office, Preps Power6 Blades

Tag: Uncategorizedadmin @ 2:51 pm

Back in June, IBM previewed a blade server chassis aimed at moving blades from the data centers of the world’s largest organizations, who have been trying to cram as much computing power as they can in as small a space as possible, to small and medium businesses, who want integrated systems that fit in a closet, in a corner, or under a desk. The BladeCenter S was IBM’s initial foray, and now that Hewlett-Packard has announced its “Shorty” BladeSystem c3000 chassis, IBM has rejiggered the BladeCenter S chassis to better compete in the SMB space.

The BladeCenter S chassis that IBM previewed in June for delivery in the fourth quarter of this year is based on a repurposed first-generation BladeCenter chassis. This box has a 7U rack-mounted form factor and has room for 14 single-width, vertical blade servers in the front and room for various kinds of power supplies and switching gear in the back. With the second-generation BladeCenter H chassis, IBM added 1U of space top and bottom to the chassis to allow room for cooling and other electronics, but still put a maximum of 14 single-width blades in the 9U chassis. These chasses are both 28 inches deep, but IBM does have special BladeCenter T chasses that are 20-inches deep and that run on DC power. The BladeCenter S is not based on this shallow chassis (maybe it should have been), but rather the full-depth box. Unlike prior blade chasses, the BladeCenter S runs on 110/120 volt power instead of 220/240 volt power, which means it can plug into a normal electrical outlet in most office (and home) environments.

Sun Debuts Mobile Data Center in Shipping Container

Tag: Uncategorizedadmin @ 6:14 pm

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Server and software maker Sun Microsystems Inc. (SUNW) has a novel twist on the data center: a portable version of the hulking outposts that house nothing but computers and equipment needed to store and process raw data.

The concept project dubbed Project Blackbox is a “data center in a box” with all the necessary servers, storage and networking equipment packed into a cushioned and cooled 20-foot-long cargo shipping container. Sun was unveiling the system Tuesday.
